Sponsoring the ‘Shirin Fozdar Trust Fund’
A charity dinner was jointly held by Singapore Management University Wee Kim Wee Centre and the Shirin Fozdar Trust Fund on February 23. The guest-of honour for the night was President SR Nathan. CWG made a donation of $3,000 to support the event.
Malaysia-China-Asia Pacific Women's Economic Summit
To celebrate International Women’s Day this year, CWG Chairman Ms Claire Chiang led a group of 20 members from the Career Women Group to participate in “Malaysia-China-Asia Pacific Women’s Economic Summit” from 4th March to 7th March. Ms Claire Chiang is one of the speakers for the summit.
During the welcome dinner on 4th March, Malaysia’s Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Senator Dato' Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said that women have the power to push the country’s economic development and should be given more chances to prove themselves.
In her keynote address, “Opportunities and Role of Women in Economic Transformation, ”Malaysia’s Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, YB Senator Dato’ Sri Idris Jala pointed out that equal opportunities in education has helped more women achieved outstanding performances in their career. Men should learn to work closely with women or risk losing a valuable asset to the company and the nation.
During the forum on “Couple Entrepreneurial Success”, Ms Claire Chiang used the following words to narrate Banyan Tree Holding’s story, “Comprehend, Guidance, Harmony and Heart”. The couple’s shared love for travel, culture, community, country and the world has inspired them to create an environment which provides a romantic experience and at the same time benefit mankind. Their development of the tourism industry in Phuket has directly triggered the economic growth of the island, thereby increasing employment rates on the island. The huge numbers of employment opportunities now available on Phuket is testimony to the couple’s dream.
Ms Claire Chiang said that the modern woman has the freedom of choice. As long as she dares to follow her dream, with a concrete plan, she definitely has the ability to fulfill her dreams. She pointed out that like the seagulls that need to flap both wings in order to fly, both genders need to complement each other in order to succeed.
The wing in the higher position does not have to be the man as women can also play an important role. Striking a balance between the couple is important for the business to take flight. She said that the International Women Day 100th Anniversary does not only celebrate the equality of both sexes but also celebrate the change of women’s role in today’s society.
The inaugural “100 years in retrospect, women continue to drive progress” Malaysia-China-Asia Pacific Women’s Economic Summit” was held at Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa. The summit gathered more than 700 outstanding female entrepreneurs, political and community leaders from Malaysia, China, Hong Kong and Singapore.
After the first day of the summit, President of main organizer, Malaysia-China Cultural and Arts Association and Managing Director of sponsor, HAI-O invited the delegations from Singapore, China, Taiwan and Malaysia for a networking dinner.
On the second night, the members of the Career Women Group bonded over dinner and karaoke session.
Members who attended the Summit included CWG Chairman Ms Claire Chiang, Vice-Chairman , Ms Quek Soo Boon, Committee Members, Ms Ang Soon Buay, Ms Jennifer Lim, Ms Lily Kuo, Ms Adeline Ting, Ms Sharon Chin, YEN Committee Member, Ms Anne Lee, SCCCI Secretariat, Senior Director Tan Siew Kiang and Senior Correspondent Tang Soh Kuen.
All members who took part in this 4 days 3 night trip agreed that the trip has allowed them to network with career women from other parts of the world and at the same time, foster closer relationship within the group.
Event Highlights
Dialogue with Minister Josephine Teo
CWG conducted a dialogue with Minister of State for Finance and Transport Mrs Josephine Teo on July 8. During the dialogue, Mrs Josephine Teo stressed that with the increasing number of females in the workforce today; it is inevitable that there is a rising number of women holding position in the management level. Additionally, the change in gender roles and increase understanding between married couples meant that we are all moving towards to a better society.
The dialogue touched on topics closely related to career women as well as social issues such as the increase on childcare fees, encouraging women to return to the workforce and accept higher management roles, entrepreneurship as well as the effectiveness of the current baby bonus scheme.
5 August - ‘Power Sharing and Networking Evening’
On August 5, RAVE China Investments’ chairperson, Dr Virginia Cha, conducted a seminar on “Lesson Learnt from Bringing an International Franchise to China” at the SCCCI Auditorium to share her experiences working in China
Ms Ang Shih-Huei, the Managing Director of Pelham Bell Pottinger Asia, also shared her experiences through the theme “Maximising Your Success through Reputation Management”,
The seminar attracted over 50 participants
Chongqing Women’s Federation Visit
CWG’s chairperson Ms Quek Soo Boon and the members 20 members from the Chongqing Women’s Federation of 20 members on August 17.
Breast Cancer Foundation ‘Pink Waves High Tea Party’
CWG supported the Breast Cancer Foundation’s ‘Pink Waves High Tea Party’ at Conrad Centennial Singapore Hotel on September 10. The guest-of-honour for this event was Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Education and Ministry of Law, Ms Sim Ann.
Networking Session
On September 16, a networking session was held at CWG committee member Dr Hwang Yee Cheau’s house. The session served as a platform for the planning of upcoming CWG’s events and programmes for International Women’s Day next year
Supporting A*STAR Seminar
A*STAR conducted a seminar titled “Enabling the last 100-metre of healthcare in an aging society” at the Biopolis Matrix Building on November 22. The speaker for this seminar Ms Ninie Wang, founder and CEO of Pinetree Senior Care Services (Beijing) shared her views on China’s aging population and her entrepreneurship experience.
CWG Sharing & Networking Session ‘Smile Your Way to a Healthier Life!’
On November 23, Dr Peter Chew, a gynaecologist and Dr Marlene Teo, a Periodontist shared knowledge on how to “smile your way to a healthier life!” during a CWG Sharing & Networking Session held at the SCCCI exhibition room.
Ms Claire Chiang’s ‘My Journey and After’ Official Book Launch
On December 7, the official book launch of CWG Advisor Ms Claire Chiang’s ‘My Journey and After’ was held at SCCCI Auditorium. The Prime Minister’s wife, Ho Ching and 400 over eminent professionals from the government, business, education, social and cultural sector attended the event. The book, penned by Ms Claire Chiang and well-known journalist, Poon Sin Huwa, records the journey of Ms Claire from childhood to motherhood as well as her unique view towards life.
Ms Claire Chiang said, “I’m really glad I’ve finally completed this family heirloom. I hope the book will inspire more people to pen down their own story as well.”
A Visit to Changi Women’s Prison
In support of the Yellow Ribbon Project, CWG organised a Women’s Prison Visit on December 21 to explore how CWG members can tap on their resources to lend a helping hand to the inmates by providing them with practical work skill, training or job placement in the rehabilitation service.
